We encourage local residents to become more physically active because we see the real and lasting impact that inactivity has on people’s health and wellbeing in our community. Hartlepool has some of the highest levels of excess weight in the North East around 71% of adults are classified as overweight or obese, compared to a national average of around 61%. Just over 59% of adults here meet the recommended levels of physical activity each week, and around 27% do less than 30 minutes of movement—essentially inactive. We know this puts people at greater risk of serious conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and poor mental health, and that’s something we’re determined to help change.

That’s why we run our Be More Active campaign from walking group to running, to make being active easier, more social, and part of everyday life. We know that regular movement not only improves physical health but also boosts confidence, reduces isolation, and can even help people take steps toward employment. Helping people move more is part of how we build a stronger, more resilient community. We believe that when people are healthier, they’re better able to connect, grow, and thrive and that’s what we’re here to support
